Ambrose CUSHMAN married Elizabeth MILLARD in 1804 in West Constable, NY.
The first CUSHMAN in the Franklin County, NY area was Silas CUSHMAN, descended from Robert and Thomas CUSHMAN, Mary ALLERTON CUSHMAN and John HOWLAND, all Mayflower passengers.
Silas CUSHMAN was born in 1778 and came into West Constable in 1802. In that same year he married Elinor MILLARD, whose people came from Washington County, NY. They had 12 children, 6 sons and 6 daughters. Silas died in 1857 and is buried beside his wife in Riverside Cemetery, Westville, NY.
Ambrose CUSHMAN came to West Constable in 1804 and married Elizabeth MILLARD, younger sister of Silas' wife. They had four children.
Submit (CUSHMAN) JOHNSON, daughter of Silas or Ambrose, born 1 Feb 1812 in Westville, NY.
Abiatha CUSHMAN was Ambrose's oldest son. He married Elizabeth CREIGHTON, and they had 7 children.
Ambrose CUSHMAN was the second oldest of Abiatha's children. He was a marble cutter in Fort Covington Village, his home was on Center Street. He had two sons, Silas CUSHMAN and Bet CUSHMAN, and a daughter Ina CUSHMAN STORRS (of Canton, NY).
Robert CUSHMAN, another son of Ambrose CUSHMAN, married twice and had 17 children. He died in 1897 at the age 87. His farm was just north of Deer River Corners. He had a son Robert CUSHMAN and a daughter Grace CUSHMAN, who were 'well known socially about 1890'.
William Gillis CUSHMAN, son of Robert CUSHMAN, spent his life in Fort Covington Village, where he practiced real estate and insurance and held various offices. His daughter, Francies CUSHMAN, still lives on the same block.
This information has been gathered from a number of sources, including my own old family papers. I'd like to thank the various town historians in Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, NY for their help and input. The book "Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth" by Davis contains the complete early history of the Mayflower families, including a large section on the Cushmans.
I am now beginning the slow process of tracking down more linkages, and would be very interested in hearing from anyone with information on these families.
I do have, in my possession, a great deal more information on these individuals, as well as several other lines which I will gradually add to the web. Feel free to contact me for more information on specific individuals.
